Another Electronic Commerce Challenge for Distributors

How will you set pricing for your products for your electronic commerce customers?

  1. We will use list prices from the suppliers, if we have them.
  2. We will use the “last bracket” prices from the company price book.
  3. We haven’t really thought about it yet.

A recent MDM survey indicated that 85% of distributors plan to invest in website upgrades this year. Many of those companies will spend large sums to build an advanced electronic commerce storefront into their website. The upsurge of e-commerce interest by distributors may be provoked by the emergence of amazonsupply.com. There is also a growing awareness that distrbutors like Grainger and MSC Industrial Direct are receiving a large and rapidly growing portion of their orders via electronic commerce. Most distributors have come to the realization that e-commerce isn’t just a fishing expedition to find some new customers who happen to stumble onto their site.
