Non-Conformances in AX 2012

Non-conformances in AX 2012 are used to report anything that may be an issue with a product.  But that also comes with the stipulation that any non-conformance that is created, must have a product associated with it as well as a quantity of that product specified.  When creating a non-conformance, the required information is a type, an item number, and a problem type.  Also, if the type is customer or vendor, those accounts must be specified as well.

There are six types of non-conformances:

  • Internal
  • Customer
  • Vendor
  • Service Request
  • Production
  • Co-product production

Non-Conformances are generally created the same way a quality order is created and work much in the same way.  They can be related to a production order and can also be related to a quality order, but they are different in how they are handled by AX.

A non-conformance can really only have four statuses: Open, Refused, Approved, and Closed.  Approval is not required before closing but is an option that will also allow for tracking of who made the approval.  The non-conformance form has two related forms that have information tied to each record.  They are linked via buttons at the top of the form and are “Related Operations” and “Corrections”.

AX Corrections are a useful feature for using non-conformances.  This gives the ability to create a list of corrections of what needs to be done for product to be fixed.  Corrections also can be assigned to a particular worker so they can be filtered and monitored to completion.  A correction keeps track of the dates and times the “correction task” was created, when it was requested for completion, a priority, a planned date, and a completion date and time.  The only status a correction can have is either open or completed.

The other linked form is the Related Operations form.  On this form all actions (operations) that need to be performed in relation to the non-conformance can be entered and tracked.  The information that can be entered is item information for any items that are used on the non-conformance, quality charges for anything that requires a cost value to be entered, and a timesheet where the time to perform the operation can be entered.  Each of the forms are available, but not mandatory for information pertaining to the non-conformance.

Non-conformances are generally used just as a tracking and reporting tool.  The functionality can be somewhat tedious to take full advantage of since there are quite a few forms that must be clicked through to track all the necessary information for related operations and corrections.  But when all the information is entered and completed, the standard reporting and inquires do allow for a decent overview of all entered non-conformances, corrections and related operations.
